GIRL POWER!!!

When five talented, hard-working and ambitious girls unite for a cause, it will surely have a powerful output.

Originally named as ‘Touch’, Melanie B, Melanie C, Victoria, Geri and Emma auditioned for an upcoming girl group to be managed by Bob and Chris Herbert. The girls met up in 1994 and came from different parts of England. They knew right and then that they would be famous one day and got impatient to make it happen. After almost two years of working with the Herberts, the girls left the management and hired Simon Fuller as their manager.

The debut album ‘Spice’ was released by Virgin Records in 1996 and it produced hit singles like ‘Wannabe’, ‘Say You’ll Be There’, 2 Become 1′, ‘Mama’ and ‘Who Do You Think You Are’. They were featured in almost every music magazine. It helped that they were tagged by Smash Hits with nicknames like Posh Spice (Victoria Adams-Beckham), Scary (Melanie Brown), Sporty (Melanie Chisholm), Ginger (Geri Halliwell) and Baby (Emma Bunton). Before you knew it, they were endorsing lots of products – from cameras to lollipops to sodas to deodorants!

The girls released their second album called ‘Spice World’, which spawned hit singles such as ‘Spice Up Your Life’, ‘Stop’, ‘Too Much’ and ‘Viva Forever’. A movie version was shown worldwide and is considered to be a cult classic today.

On May 28, 1998, Geri Halliwell left the band due to ‘personal differences’. That didn’t stop the rest of the girls in producing the album ‘Forever’. The group disbanded in 2000 to focus on solo projects.

In 2007, the original Spice Girls reunited for a series of concerts and a greatest hits album. The musical ‘Viva Forever!’ featured the hit songs of the group and it didn’t close until June 2012 at the Piccadilly Theatre in London.
